Celebrating Trustee Week – Meet Anita Jay

Championing Families, Strengthening Communities, and Welcoming New Trustees

This week, we’re celebrating Trustee Week – a time to recognise the incredible people who volunteer their time and expertise to guide Home-Start Richmondshire.

Our Trustees play a vital role behind the scenes, ensuring we have the vision, direction, and resources to keep supporting families across our community.

Today, we’re delighted to introduce one of our valued Trustees – Anita Jay – who shares her journey, reflections, and encouragement for anyone thinking about joining our board.

Meet Anita Jay

What first inspired you to get involved with Home-Start Richmondshire as a Trustee?

I have two children who are now grown up and have left home. Throughout their childhood, I was always a full-time working mum; juggling work, school, clubs, and home life while trying to be the best mum I could be.

When I saw an advert for Home-Start, I looked longingly at how they could help families and thought, “I could have really used that support 20+ years ago.”

Now that I’m retired, I have the time to offer Home-Start my support. Being a Trustee allows me to use my own experiences of parenting and family life to help others.

What did you know about Home-Start before joining the board?

Very little, to be honest! But as soon as I expressed an interest, the local branch reached out. I met some of the other Trustees, who explained their roles, and I immediately felt reassured that I had something valuable to contribute.

What does being a Trustee actually involve?

It’s not as time-consuming as people might think. Yes, there are papers to read before meetings, but they’re interesting and relevant. The meetings are efficient, and we sometimes attend volunteer gatherings or coffee mornings too; those are lovely opportunities to connect with the people we support.

What has been the most rewarding part so far?

Hearing feedback from families and volunteers about the positive difference Home-Start Richmondshire has made. It’s incredibly moving.

What have you learned since becoming a Trustee?

I’ve learned just how hard schools and social services are working to support families, even when resources are stretched thin.

How does Home-Start Richmondshire make a difference locally?

The support Home-Start gives families has a ripple effect across the community; from happier parents to more confident children. As Trustees, we help make this possible by securing funding, supporting our staff and volunteers, and ensuring the service continues to run.

What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a Trustee?

We all have life experience – that’s valuable! You’ll have more to contribute than you think.

Please consider joining us. The local area is growing, and our services are needed more than ever. Without Trustees, this unique and vital support would be lost.

Gosh, come and join us! Learn more about what the local area already offers families and help us plug the gaps.

Could You Be Our Next Trustee?

Home-Start Richmondshire is currently recruiting new Trustees to join our board. Whether you have professional experience, community knowledge, or simply a passion for supporting families, we’d love to hear from you.

Sue McVay

I joined Home-Start Richmondshire as manager in June 2023. Previous to that, I worked in the Early Years sector, operationally and strategically, for over 30 years.

I am passionate about supporting parents to give children the best possible start in life and believe that Home-Start Richmondshire has the knowledge, experience and understanding to deliver this through the staff team and network of volunteers.

Emma Felinski

I recently joined HSR as a coordinator, in April 2025 after working as a support worker for many years. I am enjoying my role, supporting families through challenging times. I have spent time overseas, including New York, Paraguay, Cyprus and Germany. While working overseas In Paraguay South America I worked with children and families living in poverty. This was an experience that was very rewarding, and my passion to support people continues. I love to travel the world and experience different cultures. I also enjoy hiking, with my two dogs, wild swimming and spending time with my children.

Jill Sinaguglia

I joined Home Start Richmondshire as a coordinator in July 2023.  I’ve had a varied career working as a radio presenter and journalist, running my own chocolate business and as a children and families’ social worker. I have three children and have found parenting to be a wonderful but sometimes scary and challenging journey.  I am passionate about getting alongside families who are struggling.  I know sometimes you just need a bit of encouragement to keep going or reassurance that you are doing it right!  I love that at Home Start we can do just that, and it is a privilege to support and empower families to reach their goals.  In my spare time I enjoy reading, visiting coffee shops and exploring new places.

Andrew Terry

My professional background was in children’s services, initially as a secondary school teacher and then leading teams of specialist staff for North Yorkshire Council. I retired in 2015 from the post of Assistant Director, Access and Inclusion, the service which works with and for schools and the parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities. For a time, I also managed the education social work service and the looked after children’s service.

I volunteered at the Friarage Hospital for 8 years until 2023, mainly with elderly patients and now help in the community.

I believe that the early years of a child’s life are vital to their wellbeing and prospects at school and beyond, and that a stable family life is crucial. Coming from a very large family, I have personal experience of the challenges that strained domestic life can bring and I joined Home Start Richmondshire in January 2022 to play a part in helping parents and carers when they ask for additional support.
